Marie Ocean
I am Marie Ocean. I was born and raised in Haiti. In 1995, I migrated to the United States of America. However, I have never been detached from my motherland. From the time that I arrived, I enrolled at Miami Edison Sr. High School and 3 years later I graduated. Upon graduation, I attended Miami Dade College (MDC) majored in Business Administration. After 2 years at MDC, I transferred to Florida International University (FIU) where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In pursuit of higher education, I attended Nova Southeastern University from which, in 2015, I completed a master’s in business administration (MBA). Most importantly, I am a child of God, a mother, and a very proud educator working for Miami Dade County Public Schools system.
Prior to becoming a teacher, I have worked in other capacities, such as clerical and paraprofessional within the Miami Dade Public School system. In addition to being a teacher, I am also the PD Liaison at my school location as well as an Alternate Steward at North Miami Adult Center; while serving as an FEA Delegate. During the 2017-2018 School Year, I was honored to be voted “Rookie Teacher” of the year. To top it all, I am the founder and owner of “The Ultimate Ocean”.
My mission is to help those who can’t help themselves by demonstrating the reality on what General Colin Powell said: “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure”.
Dinah Gay-Dorvil
My name is Dinah Gay-Dorvil and I’m pleased to be on the board of AHED. I’ve been an educator for MDPCS for the past 15 years. Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe that I’ve already been teaching for so long. When I was first hired as a teacher, I was considered an “out of fielder”- someone whose background was not in education. As a matter of fact, my degree in clinical psychology landed me a jobs as a research assistant at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York and as a social worker for grassroots organizations in Brooklyn and Long Island, providing advocacy services, housing placement assistance, and HIV prevention education and counseling.
After moving back home in 2005 I transitioned into the field of education. For ten years I was a classroom teacher, providing instruction to 2nd and 3rd grade gifted students at an elementary school in North Miami. It is this experience that helped me discover my passion for helping children reach their fullest potential. Since 2015, I have been working as an Instructional Reading Coach, guiding teachers towards understanding the impact of setting high expectations for all students, regardless of labels, and directing instructional services related to literacy. In this capacity, I am still able to do what I love- serving members of my community.
I am also a National Board-Certified Teacher and have also earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
